Tips

Protect yourself from criminal influence

You could be of great use to criminals who want to steal goods or smuggle drugs through Schiphol Airport. They often ask simple things and act as if it is just a small favour. But once you say yes, you can't get rid of them easily. Be aware of this and use the following tips to prevent this from happening.

Be careful with your Schiphol access pass

Wear your access pass visibly in places where it is mandatory but put it away when you take the train home, for example. Do not share photos of your access pass on social media and be careful who you tell about it. For criminals, people with an access pass are a possible way in to our airport.

Be careful what you share on social media

Of course, you can be proud of working at Schiphol airport. But be careful with what you share on Instagram, Facebook, or other social media. For example, don't share photos of your access pass, work schedules or sensitive information about your workplace. Criminals are also on social media.

Don't share details

Criminals weren't easy to recognize. They are often friendly and well-spoken. They also know how to manipulate people. So be careful if someone asks you about your work. Especially if they keep asking. Keep details such as working hours, flights you work on and your Schiphol access pass to yourself.

Report every suspicious act

Do you ever see people at work who don't belong there? Have you ever been offered money for your Schiphol access pass? Do you have colleagues who behave strangely? Report it to your manager, a confidant or (anonymously) to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

Dare to ask for help

When you've been persuaded or forced by criminals to do the wrong thing, it feels like you don't have a choice. This is not the case, although there may be consequences. Either way, getting out starts with speaking up. Talk to your employer, a counselor or report to the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

Be a good employee

This may sound obvious, but be professional. That means you are proud of your job, take responsibility and inspire your colleagues. You are honest and reliable; you will not be bribed. You do the right thing, even when nobody is watching. You are alert and talk openly or report it when you are approached with an unusual request.

Your position at the airport

You work at Schiphol and visit places where others are not allowed to go. That makes you interesting for criminals. Be aware of your vulnerable position. And realize what is at stake. There is often no turning back.

You are loyal and professional

• You are proud of your work
• You feel responsible
• You are a good example for colleagues

However, you can also unconsciously do something unsafe: a post on social media, for example.

You are honest and trustworthy

• You do the right thing even when no one is watching
• You won't be bribed
• You can look at yourself in the mirror

You are always attentive

• You'll discuss it with your supervisor if you're asked to do something you find odd
• You speak to each other in the workplace
• You'll report it to your company if you notice something remarkable

When in doubt, test yourself

• Does this behavior match who you want to be?
• What are you putting at risk?
• What choice comes next? What do you start with?
• What do you think others do when they're in your shoes?
